Smart Mate, an own son of Smart Little Lena and out of Freckles Playmate, has taken an outstanding pedigree and has added to it with his own achievements. Discovered by Pat and Connie Fitzgerald in his five-year-old year, he was purchased by the Fitzgearlds and aggressively campaigned in his six-year-old year with tremendous results as a finalist in numerous aged events and earnings of almost $50,000.

Arguably the best producing son of Smart Little Lena, Smart Mate has also proven himself in the breeding arena. Smart Mate's offspring have earned over $3 MILLION. Smart Mate crosses well on a variety of mares, particularly ones sired by Doc's Hickory and Doc Quixote.

Nutn Buta Houndog, one of Smart Mate's top performers, with lifetime earnings in excess of $144,000, was the 2002 Brazos Bash Futurity Open Champion and an NCHA Classic/Challenge Open Reserve Champion. Other top performers of Smart Mate include Mates Irish Rose, with earnings in excess of $119,000 and Mates Little Playboy, with earnings in excess of $112,000.
